Travel tips from a travel buff (Part 1)

Part 1: Before going on a trip

  • Plan

- This is the first and the most important part of travelling. This includes knowing the essentials: where to go and who you’ll be with, Trust me, knowing your travel buddies and the the places you’ll go to will make or break your trip

  • Consider your travel buddies

- Trips will either break or make a relationship. Whether you’ll go with your friends or enemies is up to you. As much as possible, be with those you’re comfortable with. If not for sure you’ll end up being sober and stressed out. On my experience, the ideal group is 4. It’s more economical since you’ll split up the expenses. You’ll also fit in a one-room hotel, car, taxi, tricycle, 2 habal-habals, etc.

  • Know the place

- Know the weather, religion and culture of the place. Travelling is not only seeing the tourist spots, but savoring the culture, food and of course, interacting with the locals.

  • Pack light

- How would you enjoy the trip if you’re carrying a heavy bag? Take only the essentials. Ziplocks and sarong is a must.

  • Use ziplocks

- Ziplocks can be used for packing lightly. Roll your shirts, shorts, etc. Place it in a ziplock, remove excess air and seal it up. Voila! Not only did you save some space for your other things, you end up with a lighter bag. You can also use it to pack your valuables and electronics especially when you’re riding a boat. For sure, your gadgets are saved from those waves (Of course, just avoid the water if you can)

  • Bring a Sarong

- Sarong is more than just a fashion accessory; you can use it as a picnic mat, towel, blanket or a bag. Versatile eh?!

  • Bring a tripod

- To avoid having a big face with small landmarks as background, bring a tripod.

  • Bring something for that extra time

- Bring your iPod, book, playing cards. Bring something that will lighten up your day during those idle times.

  • Bring food and water

- Munchies and water is a must. Who knows where the next restaurant is? Better be well-fed than be grumpy because of hunger.

  • Bring the other essentials

- Alcohol, wet wipes and insect repellant lotions is a must especially when hiking.

  • Bring enough money

- Bring money that will last at least a day. It’s not advisable to bring a lot of cash. ATM’s are around the country anyway. Both of course, never rely on these machines. Have enough money. Just make sure to keep your valuables safe.

- If you’re going outside the country, bring at least 100USD. USD is the universal currency. Money changers are hard to find in some countries. Better have a currency that everyone accepts than end up worrying how to pay a service, food, hotel, etc.

  • Know your budget

- A trip depends on how much your budget is. Low-budget doesn’t mean you don’t have to enjoy it. There are ways to enjoy travel even if you’re low on budget
