How to go there
This post is part of our trip in Macau. For the complete itinerary, check out this link here: Macau itinerary
Ruins of Saint Paul is walking distance from Senado Square. Jeff and I came from Lou Kau Mansion, and Ruins of Saint Paul would be about 5 min walk from there. We made occasional stops on our way there, including a Portuguese egg tart snack in this cute store.
What to See – Ruins of Saint Paul
Ruins of St Paul is flocked by tourists during mid day. It is best to come here on mornings if you’re looking to have a good picture of it. Jeff and I came there at 10 am and look at how many people there are:
The ruins, formerly known as ‘cathedral of Saint Paul’ was destroyed in the 1800′s during a fire caused by a typhoon. Only a portion of the walls and staircase of the church remained though a full restoration of what’s left of the church was done in 1991.
Part of the restoration was a view deck located at the back of the church.
A museum is also located at the basement of the church, featuring artifacts and tombs which was originally part of the church.
Na Tcha Temple
Na Tcha is a taoist temple, located beside ruins of Saint Paul. It was built in the 1800′s and is now part of the sites listed in the Historic Centre of Macau, and UNESCO World Heritage List.
Section of the Old City walls
Located in front of Na Tcha Temple, and adjacent to ruins of Saint Paul. The wall was built by Portuguese settlers in Macau as part of the defense structure they built in the city. Today, only a portion of the old city walls remain as it was destroyed several times due to government officials against the construction of the wall. It is now literally just a section of a wall.
