Prony, the giant python

After touring Baclayon church, we then went to the house of the owner of the world’s largest python in captivity at Bohol.

How to go there

From the ferry terminal in Tagbilaran, we hired a van to tour us around Bohol’s tourist spots. Our driver slash tour guide – Kuya Lito, took us to Baclayon church first, then he dropped us off at the house of the owner of the world’s largest python in captivity at Bohol.

What to see

Entering the gated house of the giant snake’s owner, you can initially tell that the residential lot has been turned to a tourist spot. On the gate is a parking attendant waiting for tourist’s vehicles coming to see the python. A picture of the giant snake is right up in the front, screaming that the giant snake can be found inside.

A few walks away from the gate, you’ll see the specially-made cage for the 12 year-old python named ‘Prony’. The giant snake shares the cage with a few birds, and a lemur, amazingly, she doesn’t eat them and only eats what’s fed to her which is usually goats, pigs, dogs, and chickens. According to the caretaker there, Prony eats at least two goats or an adult pig once a month.

Near her cage, there are picture displays of her eating other animals, including a dog. Prony is over 300 kilos and seeing her eat those animals made me a bit scared of getting in the cage with her. I asked the caretaker there if we can get in, but according to them it’s only Jing “the Python Lady”, owner of Prony,  allows people to get in the cage. She wasn’t there when we arrived.

So we thought we’d never get the chance to touch prony. The tourists before us wasn’t able to get in the cage either so I went to Kuya Lito and ask him if he could ask the people there to allow us to enter the cage. After a few seconds we were allowed in.

I gotta say, our tour guide Kuya Lito has some major influence in the people there, we had some pretty sweet deals with the locals through his help. I’m recommending his service to those looking for one.

name: Lito Baldicana

cellphone: 0919-4302141

Vehicle: Red Nissan Van

Kuya Lito said that we can get in as long as we give to the donation box near the cage. We got to touch Prony and took pictures with her. She smells pretty aweful but they said the python is bathed with shampoo almost everyday. Maybe it was the lemur who smelled, hehe.

After our turn with her, the other tourists who were there before us sees the chance to get in as well. We left them with Prony and headed off to our next spot.

Prony celebrates a birthday every October 21st, the day that she was found.
