After our trip at Bohol, we went back to Cebu again through a ferry to continue our six days Bohol-Cebu trip.
How to go there
Jeepney’s in Cebu are color, and number coded per route. From our hotel in Hotel Seaview pension house we took the jeepney number 21B going to Maribago highway. From Maribago Highway, we then took another jeepney to go to Basilica del Sto. Niño church.
What to See
The day we went to see the church was Sunday afternoon, there were already tons of church goers there, which made me a bit hesitant to explore. I was a bit worried disturbing the people there, but, ahh what the heck, I don’t think I’d be coming back there anyways.
Basilica del Santo Niño is kinda like the Quiapo church of Cebu, actually it’s very similar. It’s a typical Pinoy city-church where in flocks of Catholics visits the church every Sunday, and just outside is a nearby mall slash ‘palengke’ and tiangge vendors outside.
This church was built in 1565, and was the first convent and church in the country. The one standing now is a renovation of the old church, as it was burnt down in 1566, and again in 1628. It still bears it’s old altar which is decorated in gold and Saint idols.
On the side of the church is the church’s patron – the Sto. Nino. I’m not very familiar with this particular image of baby Jesus in Cebu, but there was a long line of patrons touching and wiping the religious idol with their handkerciefs. I guess it’s miraculous or something.
